| Using Biomass |
|
For many developing countries in Africa and Asia, using biomass for energy production is a very rewarding path to follow: it enables significant savings to be made in greenhouse gas emissions with only limited resources. It also means that energy can be produced locally which is not derived from fossil fuels (this reduces these countries’ dependence on oil).
So, what are the biomass conversion options likely to generate carbon credits ? Production of biogas by anaerobic fermentation of waste (cows aor pigs manure, organic waste). The biogas produced is used to generate heat or sometimes electricity. Small projects can be undertaken in a rural environment and larger projects with organic waste in an urban environment; Production of briquettes from agricultural waste or urban organic waste to substitute for the use of wood;
Improvement in charcoal production output in order to consume less wood;
Projects for drying and conserving agricultural products which will avoid rotting on the spot. Methane emissions thus avoided enable carbon credits to be generated which will facilitate investment in drying or storage equipment; Kiva Carbon works on any project which uses renewable biomass to produce energy, replacing the consumption of petroleum products.
